It’s the time of year where everyone is thinking about making changes for the better. New Year’s resolutions abound and people are talking about ‘new year = new you’. Other than losing weight, the next most popular resolution is to get organized. As you sit and stare at the piles and piles of stuff on your desk, I bet you can relate. Here are a few simple steps to help you tackle the mess on your desk!
Tackle the Mess on Your Desk
Schedule Time to Organize
First things first, dig through the piles until you find that brand new calendar you just bought. Go ahead…I’ll wait…
Now, find a day that you can schedule some serious time to take on the mess your office has become. Don’t just pencil it in, use a big black marker to block off that time and stick to it! You should probably put a reminder in your phone as well. Okay, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Step 1 is done.
You don’t need a lot to get started, so don’t let this step get in the way of your progress. You’ll need three containers large enough to house your mess!
One container for things to keep, one for items to take home or to donate, and one container for trash. You might want to make this one the largest container! It’s okay to throw it away…it’s okay to throw it away…it’s okay to throw it away. This shall be your mantra.
Clear It Out
The time has come to start sorting. Pick up the first thing your hand touches and decide quickly which box it belongs in: keep, donate, trash. Lean heavily toward the trash. If you haven’t used the item in the last few months, think hard about whether you need to keep it. Just because something is useable, that doesn’t make it useful in your day to day work life.
Start with your desktop and continue to drawers, shelves, piles on the floor, wherever your mess is. Keep sorting those items until every surface and drawer is clear.
Put It Back
Dig through the ‘keep’ box and start putting things back. Resist the urge to just start piling again. Instead, think about how you work. Put the items you use most on your desktop or in the top drawers; items used less frequently can go in lower drawers or on shelves. Make a plan for where each type of item will go. When everything has a home, it is much easier to keep your desk clean and clear.
Keep It Up
Don’t let all your hard work disappear in a week or two. Leave yourself 15 minutes of time at the end of every day to tackle the mess that has built up on your desk.
Put away every item that has found it’s way into piles on your desk throughout the day. You will feel so much better when you walk in tomorrow if you take a little time to reset today.
It’s time for a victory dance! You have worked hard to get to this spot, so take a well deserved moment to celebrate.
Treat yourself to a reward for all of your hard work. But be sure it’s a good one! Like munching on a big bag of Peanut M&Ms. I mean, who really cares about that losing weight resolution?! You’re an organizing genius! That’s worth any reward.
