November is National Novel Writing Month. In honor of NaNoWriMo (that’s right, we’ve made it into a New York City neighborhood), we’ve got all the writing essentials you need to start living your dream of becoming a writer.
Novel Writing Essentials
Paper and Pencil
Some people feel more comfortable going old school. If you’d rather put pen (or pencil) to paper as you start your writing journey, be sure to get stocked up. Grab a notebook or journal to house your thoughts and set yourself up with your favorite writing utensil. You may want to snag a good trash can while you’re at it. You know, one that you can use to shoot baskets when you wad up and toss your last mess of grammatical errors.
Maybe tap-tap-tapping your fingers on the keyboard is more your style. If that’s the case, there are still a few supplies you may want to have on hand. For one, a backup drive is a must! You don’t want to enter into the panic inducing moment of a computer crash and lose all of your hard-earned lyrical turns of phrase. Eventually you will also want a printer so that when your novel is finished, you can stand back and admire that stack of paper full of your story!
Other than the words in your head and a place to record them, there are a few other supplies you might need. It’s always good to have a dictionary and thesaurus on hand when you are writing. If you are going to use a word that’s not a real word, be sure it’s on purpose. A New Essentials Writer’s Companion might be a good idea as well, because you are, y’know, writing.
