It’s mid-afternoon and you are dragging. Your eyelids are at half-mast, your head is practically bobbing to the beat of your own personal lullaby, and you’ve been reading this paragraph for the last 15 minutes. We’ve all been there. These 5 tips will help you keep your energy up at the office!
Keep Your Energy Up at the Office
1. Get moving
When you’re getting sleepy, one of the best moves to make is to… well, move! Take a quick break from your desk and walk around – maybe even do a few flights of stairs. Not only will walking help boost your energy, it will help you get those fitness steps in as well!
2. Snack time
There may be a good reason for your mid afternoon droop. It’s possible you are hungry! When you choose the right snacks, you can boost your energy for the rest of your work day. Before you grab that candy, you’d be better off to choose a healthy snack bar or a bag of nuts. Your energy will last longer and you won’t come crashing down an hour after your snack break.
3. Let there be light
Dim light sends a signal to your body that it is time to rest, such as early morning or late evening light. If you are regularly feeling a lack of energy, perhaps your office needs a lighting makeover. If you have windows, open the blinds wide to let in as much natural light as possible. You may even consider arranging your furniture so that your desk is near the window. If natural light isn’t an option, try adding a few more lamps with bright white light bulbs. More light = more energy.
Our tendency is to reach for a glass of caffeine when our energy tanks. Sure, coffee and soda taste divine, but your mom was right, you really should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day. When you keep yourself hydrated, you feel more energized. Whether you prefer plain ol’ H2O, sparkling water, or even flavored water, when you drink water, you will be ready to tackle your to-do list!
5. Stay focused
There are some days that I’m distracted by everything. When you are having one of those days, you can use my secret tip for getting focused… noise canceling headphones. For some of you, it may help to plug these in to music, but for me I simply like the silence. Turn your back on the action going on around you, put on the headphones, and get to work.
