Does it ever feel like the papers piles are taking over? This year, you can get into the filing groove! These 5 steps will help you prevent papers from becoming a pile on your desk!
Get Into the Filing Groove
The first step to tackling those paper piles is to come up with a system. You will want three filing zones. One for long term files, one for current projects, and a spot for recycling the papers you are done with. Consider where your zones will be so that they fit into the flow of your work day.
The next step is to gather the supplies you will need to create your system. A filing cabinet or file boxes are necessary for the files that you need to keep long term. It’s also a good idea to have a table top filing system for the papers that are needed for your current projects. You will also need one more spot for recycling the papers you no longer need.
Step three is where it gets real. This is the step that will change your paper piling life. Are you ready? Here’s what you do… when the paper is in your hand, classify it right away. Is this a file that you need to keep long term? Is it applicable to a current project? Or can it go straight into the recycling bin?
You’ve got the paper in your hand. It’s time to STOP, don’t drop, and deal. This is the moment where you either continue the cycle of piling or you make a change. Once you get into the habit of sorting your papers right away, you will be free of the piles forever!
Repeat steps 3-5 day in and day out. You’ve got this!
