As you high school graduate gets ready to head off to college there’s a whole host of things they will need. Help your student get their year started right with these college school supplies.
The College School Supplies You Need
You will also need to consider some technology accessories to keep your student studying strong. When they host a study session (what…it could happen) it would be helpful to have a surge protector. Their study buddies will be so thankful for a place to plug in their laptops. Outlets seem to be in short supply in a dorm room, so a surge protector with a long cord will be super helpful. A thumb drive and a USB hub are also great things to have on hand.
And then, of course, there is the backpack. While our world is becoming more and more digital, there are still things to be carried to and from class.
And some of those things might even be…wait for it…BOOKS! Stranger things have happened.
In this digital age many papers will likely be turned in online. But it is also possible that there may be a professor here or there that requires papers to be printed out. A printer, paper and ink would be helpful. Or the student center may also have a printer. If that is the case be sure you have some fasteners on hand, such as paper clips or a stapler.
Some students prefer to have a notebook for each class, others like to keep everything in one binder or a 5 subject notebook. When taking notes in class it’s a good idea to use a pen, while solving equations may require a pencil.
When students are in class they may also want to use highlighters or Post-it flags to mark important items in the text book. Be aware that textbooks that have been highlighted in might not earn as much if your student tries to sell them back at the end of the semester. Post-it flags may be a better option to mark their book.
Homework & Studying
Homework…studying…it’s a necessary evil. The good news is there are a few supplies that can help! Every professor will give students a syllabus detailing all the due dates for the semester. Be sure those get recorded immediately. Some students prefer to write those assignments on a planner rather than using a smart phone.
When it’s time to study for an exam your student may find notecards helpful. It’s the perfect way to summarize all those notes and create flashcards to help with studying. Use a sharpie or highlighter to emphasize keywords.
Depending on the courses your student is taking they may also need colored pencils (education, science, even music classes may utilize these on assignments, just to name a few). Math students will need a good graphing calculator. Learn how to choose the best one here.
For the Dorm Room
Before your student heads off to the dorms be sure you know what furniture they will need. If the college doesn’t provide a desk and chair, you may want to supply those. I mean studying is the ultimate goal, right?!!
Let’s face it, no dorm room would be complete with out some drinks and snacks. Which means you’re student will need a fridge to keep things fresh. Be sure to send your favorite college student this link to let them know how to clean that fridge once and awhile.
One last fun thing for the dorm room is a door stop. This allows your student to be social and make friends. Let’s call that goal number 2, behind studying of course!
